Gameweek One Cannot Be Won

The Differential Times · Issue #5 · Sent 19 August 2026

The Guru Take

More than 6.3 million managers have already built a squad for the new Fantasy Premier League season, and 61.3 per cent of them own João Pedro (£7.5m). Only Haaland, at 69.8 per cent, sits in more squads. Eleven players are owned by more than a quarter of the entire game. Before you agonise over a final draft, be clear about what that concentration does to gameweek one.

The maths of ownership is brutally asymmetric. Own João Pedro and his Monday night goal at Fulham lifts you and 3.9 million rivals together: a point on the board, not a place on the ladder. Leave him out and the same goal drops you behind six in ten managers in one kick. Differentials run the same logic in miniature, and in reverse. A five per cent punt who hauls carries you past one manager in twenty; if he blanks while the template forward he replaced scores, you pay twice. In gameweek one, upside is communal and downside is private.

That leaves one genuine lever: the armband. With seven in ten managers owning Haaland, captaincy is where week one rank is really decided. Captain him against Bournemouth on Sunday and you move with the crowd. Captain anyone else and you have made the biggest differential call in your squad, whatever the rest of it looks like.

So the rational posture for Friday is defensive. Cover the ownership blocks you can afford. Where you cannot, or will not, name the risk out loud and accept it. Gameweek one cannot be won. Thirty-seven more gameweeks can.

Hold that thought, because the managers who wreck their seasons in August rarely have bad drafts. They treat a week one red arrow as an emergency, tear the squad up chasing last week's points, and burn a wildcard in September on a problem four free transfers would have solved. Rank lost in week one is recoverable by October. A chip spent in panic is simply gone.

Until Friday's deadline at 18:30 BST, squad changes are unlimited and free. Run your squad through FPL Guru's Squad Report: the Swing pillar shows exactly where you differ from the field. Make sure each omission is a risk you are choosing on purpose, settle your captain, then close the app and let the long season begin.

The Gameweek Ahead

Deadline: Friday 21 August, 18:30 BST. Arsenal v Coventry kicks off 90 minutes later; ten fixtures run through Monday night.

Team news: Saliba (back) misses the start; Doku (calf) is flagged at 75 per cent. Final press conferences land Thursday and Friday, so wait before locking in doubts.

Chip watch: chips now come in two sets, the first expiring at gameweek 19, hence the gameweek 1 Bench Boost wave. It only pays with 15 genuine starters; a £4.0m bench says hold.

Price watch: prices are frozen until the deadline. Waiting costs nothing this week.

Captain & Vice

Captain: Haaland (£15.5m, home to Bournemouth on Sunday). Owned by 69.8 per cent of the game, he is the rank-protection pick, and the FPL Guru Engine, the projection model behind every number in this issue, has him at 28.4 points over the next five gameweeks. One honest caveat: 53 minutes in the Community Shield is his only start since the World Cup.

Vice: Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m, Hull away, Saturday lunchtime). The Engine actually rates him top over five weeks (29.6). They play on different days, so the vice is genuine insurance against a late team-news surprise.

Top 3 Last-Call Picks

No transfers yet, just free unlimited edits until Friday. Three players still worth squeezing in:

  • Semenyo (Man City, £8.5m, 26.5% owned): predicted to start on City's wing. The Engine projects 26.8 points over the next five gameweeks.
  • Kinsky (Spurs, £4.5m, 21.6%): confirmed first choice with Vicario loaned to Juventus. A starting keeper at the bottom price frees money everywhere else.
  • Mbeumo (Man Utd, £8.0m, 32.6%): the softest opening pair in the league, Hull away then Ipswich at home, and among the five highest-projected players in the game over the next five weeks (26.5 points).

Top 3 Differentials

The Engine's three highest-projected gameweek 1 picks owned by fewer than 3 per cent of managers:

  • Welbeck (Chelsea, £6.0m, 2.2% owned): its top differential projection for the opening weekend, though he arrives from Brighton as a squad striker, not a nailed starter. Chelsea finish the gameweek at Fulham on Monday night.
  • Richarlison (Spurs, £6.0m, 2.7%): in the frame to lead the line at Brentford on Saturday evening.
  • Strand Larsen (Crystal Palace, £6.0m, 0.6%): expected to start at Everton with Mateta short of pre-season minutes.

The Guru XI

The Engine's full £100.0m gameweek 1 draft, if you are starting from scratch:

![The Guru XI, 3-5-2: Raya; Gabriel, Calafiori, Shaw; Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo, Szoboszlai, Hughes, Slater; Haaland (captain), João Pedro. Bench: Kinsky, Kusi-Asare, Diop, van Ewijk.](https://fplguru.com/share-cards/newsletter/2026-08-19-guru-xi-kits.png)

Every pound of the £100.0m budget is spent, with the premium slots held to two (Haaland, Bruno) and the savings pushed into the £7.0m to £8.5m band.

Haaland's touches in his only start since the World Cup

Touches for Haaland in his 53-minute Community Shield outing, his only start since the World Cup final. The most-owned player in the game is fit, but a month of tournament football and barely any pre-season means undercooked. It is not a reason to leave him out of 15. It is a reason to think twice before assuming the armband is automatic, and to keep your vice-captain on someone who plays a day earlier.

Games Corner

Two daily puzzles, fresh at midnight UTC. Today's first clues:

  • Who Played With? No. 68: the mystery player shared a dressing room at FC Midtjylland (2006 to 2008) with Denmark's Christian Olsen.
  • Career Path No. 67: a career that begins at Coton Sport de Garoua (2009 to 2010).

Start a streak this week and carry it through the whole season.
